Located in the center of the crystalline city and parallel to the River Linmat, Bahnhofstrasse is the hub of finance and business. Its history is longstanding: This was Zürich’s medieval moat line. Trams and trains lead to the mostly traffic-free district, where more than 90 shops boast exclusive and often-envied labels.
But don’t just hit the shops you know from back in the States. Try some favorite Swiss-owned stores.
Day, 12 Bahnhofstrasse, opened its doors in 1916, although the doors were then stationed at 45 Bahnhofstrasse. After 75 years in the Day family, the store came into the Bencivenga family’s ownership in 2010. The Italian ties led to a new collection of designer handbags, crafted in Como and adhering to perfect Swiss standards. Be sure to pick up the beautiful Ingrid shopping bag from Day’s Sunflower Collection. It begs for jewelry (a watch, perhaps?) and chocolates from Bahnhofstrasse to be tucked inside.
Make another detour halfway down Bahnhofstrasse to “The House of Brands,” Jelmoli. Then again, with eight floors of high-end design and more than 1,000 brands to explore, perhaps this should be your only destination. From Abro to Zöppritz, Jelmoli is sure to have a perfect Swiss getaway keepsake.
All that shopping has surely whetted your taste buds’ desire for fun. Make your next spot Confiserie Sprüngli, 21 Bahnhofstrasse. Sure, the confectionary offers sensible and artistic salads and sandwiches. But it also has swoon-worthy pralines, brownies and truffles. And your palate deserves indulgence, too.
That chocolate might make you feel like a child again. Head on to Franz Carl Weber, 62 Bahnhofstrasse, and really let your inner child out to play. The huge toy store’s collections range from handcrafted, inheritance-worthy playthings to crafting materials for do-it-yourselfers.
Finish your spree at Bucherer, 50 Bahnhofstrasse, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Bucherer has one of the largest collections of Rolex watches in the world, along with plenty of other labels, including Audemars Piguet, Tissot and Carl F. Bucherer. Also be sure to check out its expansive and exclusive jewelry and diamond collections.
