Leisure Lifestyle 2023

Q&A with Tracey Cullen, Art Director

Sometimes we all need to unplug and relax to reset our minds and bodies. Our Leisure Travel Issue is all about enjoying some “me” time away in some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. I recently spent a week in Jamaica doing not much more than lounging in the sun and enjoying good food. Where is your favorite spot to unplug and relax?

EU Countries to Begin Charging for Entry in 2024

In the March 8 issue of eFlyer, we told readers about the new European Travel Information and Authorization System going into effect in 2024. We asked readers to share their thoughts on this new enactment. Two readers wrote in:

The problem with this type of system is the information is never really secure. There should be a way for payments to be made in cash, as credit card information will certainly be hacked. Even the U.S. passport renewal system is not secure. Last time I renewed and gave an email address, I started to receive dozens of offers from travel companies. Recently when I renewed, I gave an invalid email address and have received no more spam.

MARCUS STANFORD, VIA EMAIL

It creates a time-wasting inconvenience for travelers, and I would challenge the notion it improves security, as the only thing to check — or that gets checked — is the passport. A bad deal all around.

Will Unruly Passengers Be Banned from Flights in the United States?

In our March 29 issue of eFlyer, we covered the recent increase in unruly passenger incidents on planes, with calls for legislation to ban from commercial flights passengers fined or convicted of serious physical violence. We asked: Do you support this bill? Do you think unruly passengers should face a flight ban? One reader wrote in:

Yes, unload them at the next railroad grade crossing. Jokes aside, ill-behaved passengers should be banned.

Will Airline Passengers Soon Be Compensated for Delays, Cancellations?

In our May 10 issue of eFlyer, we wrote about the recent announcement from the Biden administration and Department of Transportation to propose a bill requiring airlines to compensate passengers when flight times change drastically due to reasons within the airline carrier’s control. We asked: What are your thoughts on this proposed bill? One reader shared:

If and when the government passes this proposal, each and every ticket purchased will have this cost built into it just in case the airline needs to comply with this unnecessary requirement. And if they have no cancellations or delays, guess where that extra money will end up? It is called increased profits.

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, Sydney, Australia

I was excited to read the brief review of the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk in May’s issue (page 40). My wife and I did that walk when we were in Sydney last February. It was a really spectacular walk, sometimes high up overlooking the sea and sometimes down at beach level. We did walk past Waverly Cemetery, pictured on page 40. But one of the most memorable things, for me, about the cemetery was the poem on the grave of Marjorie Pizer, an Australian poet. The grave sits right next to the fence. I’ve attached a picture I took. I thought this was a wonderful farewell for someone to leave.
