They say Madrid is in vogue for many reasons: its lifestyle, its heritage, its cuisine and all of its new attractions. And it’s true, because Madrid is on the radar of travelers looking for a cutting-edge destination that still holds onto its essence. Join us as we explore its charms.
A Walk Surrounded by Culture and Nature
With more than 70 museums and an unparalleled historical heritage, culture is a magnet that draws travelers to Madrid. Don’t miss the Landscape of Light, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes Paseo del Prado and El Retiro Park. It’s perfect for exploring on foot because it has plenty of nature in addition to art.
You can also visit Madrid’s charming house museums, located in old palatial mansions and manor homes, like Museum of Romanticism, Lázaro Galdiano Museum and Lope de Vega House Museum. Fans of the avant-garde will be in heaven in spaces like Matadero Madrid and Casa Encendida.
Enjoy Madrid’s Outdoor Dining Like a Local
When you visit Madrid, you’ll see walking is an integral part of the city’s lifestyle. Everything is within easy reach: museums, parks, restaurants and stores. Just choose your route and enjoy the vibrant energy you’ll find around every corner.
To feel like a local, sit down on a sunny terraza, or restaurant patio. This custom, known as terraceo, reflects the friendly and social spirit of Madrid’s residents and their love of sharing food and laughter outdoors.
Another term you’ll soon become familiar with is tardeo, which refers to the common practice of socializing in the tarde, or afternoon and evening, rather than late into the night.
Going for Tapas, Neighborhood by Neighborhood
Madrid’s diverse culinary scene is another major attraction, from century-old eateries and Michelin-starred restaurants to traditional Spanish local flavors, international cuisine and food markets.
Now that you’ve discovered terraceo and tardeo, it’s time to add tapeo to the mix: a tapas crawl, where you sample tasty, bite-sized snacks as you hop from one bar to the next.
In addition to going on tapeo routes in central neighborhoods like Madrid de Los Austrias (Hapsburg Madrid) and La Latina, try venturing off the beaten path in neighborhoods like Chueca and Lavapiés. Near El Retiro Park, you’ll also find bars along Calle de Ibiza, which, like Calle de Ponzano in Chamberí, is a favorite among Madrileños.
Shopping for Artisanal Goods
Selling unique handmade items, Madrid’s small shops capture the essence of the city. From capes and gloves to hats, fans and Manila shawls, the selection is so enticing you might find it hard to choose just one.
Before deciding, take a wander around Barrio de las Letras (the Literary Quarter), Madrid de los Austrias (Hapsburg Madrid) and Malasaña, where you’ll find shops well over a century old, including Capas Seseña, Sombrerería Medrano and Guitarras Ramírez, and the studios of up-and-coming artisans like Andrés Gallardo and Javier Medina.
At Night in a City That Never Sleeps
As the sun goes down, the sky lights up in magical colors. For the best views of Madrid’s sunsets, head to Las Vistillas Gardens, Mirador de la Cornisa observation deck at the Royal Palace or the gardens of the Temple of Debod.
This is also the perfect time to enjoy a spectacular rooftop bar like Ginkgo Sky Bar, Azotea del Círculo, El Cielo de Chicote cocktail bar, or Azotea Cibeles, which offers views of Plaza de Cibeles and Paseo del Prado.
Madrid is a place for walking, socializing day or night, going on a tapas crawl, discovering new things and, above all, enjoying the charm of a city that combines the sophistication of a major capital with the warmth of a close-knit town.
