We get started with our destination winners, some of the best cities, islands and towns around the world for leisure travel, the ones that beckon us with photographs and stay with us forever. These exceptional, award-winning spots are the places to kick back, starting with Greece, Best Historical Attractions, International, for the third consecutive year, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Best Historical Attractions, Domestic. If it’s adventure you seek, Thailand, Best Adventure Destination, International, two years in a row, and Alaska, Best Adventure Destination, Domestic, prove the spots to visit.

Aruba appears in the top spot for Best Beaches. The Dominican Republic wins Best Caribbean Island/ Destination for the fourth consecutive year (one more year until Quint Status!), while Santoríni holds on to its Best Island in Europe title for the 11th consecutive year. The Islands of Tahiti again earn Best Island Pacific Rim, second consecutive year. Amelia Island, Florida, becomes Best Island in the United States.

Skiers and snowboarders applaud the best locations here and abroad: Telluride, Colorado, earned Best North American Ski Destination for the sixth year in a row. Whistler, British Columbia, takes the title as Best International Ski Destination for the third year in a row. For golfers, Bandon Dunes Golf Resort is the top spot to hit the links.

THE PROCESS
Global Traveler conducted a survey of its readers July 15, 2023–March 8, 2024, with open-ended questions for the best in many categories of leisure, luxury and lifestyle travel. This survey ran in the magazine, as an insert to subscriber copies, as a direct mail questionnaire, online at global travelerusa.com/leisureballot and emailed during the survey period. Only those questionnaires with more than 50 percent of the questions answered were counted. Those with fewer than 50 percent of the questions answered were discarded. Employees of the magazine or individuals associated with the travel industry were not allowed to participate.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
Each year, in addition to our Leisure Lifestyle Awards, Global Traveler acknowledges those travel companies going above and beyond. Our Special Achievement Awards recognize leaders in innovation, environmental initiatives and community outreach. Congratulations to this year’s honorees!

PONANT is a cruise line doing all it can to preserve the destinations it visits. While cruise ships can unload tourists into a destination with no rhyme or reason, PONANT makes thoughtful choices, planning all its itineraries in collaboration with local communities to avoid overwhelming indigenous communities. For this and many other reasons, PONANT earns this year’s Outstanding Social Responsibility honor.

Another cruise line comes out on top, this time for Outstanding Customized Services. That cruise line is Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Its Executive Collection means cruise-goers can visit ports of call with the aid of a driver and/or an English-speaking guide in destinations like Japan, Denmark, Spain and more. Travelers may also tailor their excursions to fit their needs and interests. In fact, the whole experience is customizable — making Regent Seven Seas Cruises an obvious choice for this accolade.

Air Canada takes a two-fold approach to environmental responsibility. Leave Less equals less carbon in the atmosphere, less waste on land and in the water, and less noise. Do More is the motto for addressing environmental issues, achieved through collaboration, participation and involvement. It’s no wonder the airline received this year’s Outstanding Environmental Initiatives award.

Hilton Hotels & Resorts takes the Outstanding Innovations Special Achievement Award. There are many reasons Hilton is tops for innovation, among them its new Hilton for Business program, launching this year; its various digital programs that enhance the travel experience; and its AI technologies, including Connie, its AI-powered robot that can respond to guest questions.

Bask in Nature’s Tranquility at The Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo

When the two of us entered The Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo, past the backlit boutique items and local artisan-painted wood carvings, the place wrapped us in a feeling of tranquility. Its stone walls, earth tones, woven wall hangings and furniture made of natural materials reminded us we are part of nature’s spectrum, the abundant windows showing native plants and trees outside.

Althoff Grand Hotel Schloss Bensberg Review

After a long drive from our previous destination, it was a relief to see Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg in our view. When we pulled into the hotel court, I felt like we were pulling up to a royal palace. Considering the hotel was originally built as a castle for Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm II of Duesseldorf and his wife, Maria-Luisa of the Medici family, my thought wasn’t that far off.
