Bagan, in central Myanmar, is a magical place. More than 2,000 ancient temples and pagodas cover a 16-square-mile area, and viewing them from the basket of a hot-air balloon is about as awe-inspiring as it gets.
Because the loveliest time to see Bagan from the air is at sunrise, you’ll be watching the pilots from Balloons Over Bagan preparing to launch the balloons in the dark. By the time the balloons are ready to go, the sky will just begin to light up. Once you’re aloft, the sun starts to shine on the golden spires and red brick walls of some of the pagodas and temples. With nothing but the occasional sound of the jets and the hum of a soft breeze, the balloons float dreamily over the lush landscape as smoke from villagers’ fires swirls around the monuments and trees. Once the sun is up, the balloons float back to Earth.
Upon landing, passengers are greeted with a glass of Champagne for toasting an unforgettable experience. This kind of thrill doesn’t come cheap, and you’ll have to crawl out of bed early, but it is an experience not to be missed.
