As another phenomenal year of travel comes to an end, it’s time, as always, for Global Traveler to celebrate and award those who do it best as we announce the 2023 winners of the GT Tested Reader Survey awards. But that’s not the only cause for celebration here: We’ve hit another major milestone, as this marks our 20th year honoring the best of the best inn world of travel!

The last 20 years of award winners would not have been possible without you, our reader. Intrepid, frequent, luxury travelers yourselves, you know the standouts and you vote for them in our annual survey, from airline and airports to hotels and credit cards. We look forward to another 20 years of these prestigious reader-voted awards.

Let’s take flight and start with the winners that transport us around this great big world, starting with Singapore Airlines, once again taking top honors as Best Overall Airline in the World for the third consecutive year. It’s No. 14 for the Best Airline Alliance winner oneworld. Will the alliance take its 15th nod next year? American Airlines flies home with its seventh win for Best Airline Website (aa.com), the title of Best Airline for Domestic First Class, and Best Frequent-Flyer Customer Service for its AAdvantage program, while the Boeing 787 soared above the rest as Best Aircraft Type.

All Nippon Airways pops up on this year’s survey as Fastest-Growing Airline, Trans-Pacific. Air France scoops up three awards: Best Airline for International First Class, two years running; Best Flight Attendant Uniforms, second year in a row; and Best First-Class Seat Design, also for the second consecutive year. Other airlines winning multiple awards include Turkish Airlines, seven- time Best Airline for Business Class, its Corporate Club as Best Corporate Program for Business Travelers for the sixth consecutive year, and Best Airport Staff/Gate Agents for the eighth year in a row. Asiana Airlines is the 20-time winner for both Best Airline for Onboard Service and Best Airline for Flight Attendants; and Korean Air wins Best Airline Cuisine, Best Business-Class Seat Design and Best Frequent-Flyer Award Redemption for Korean Air SKYPASS. Delta Air Lines’ Delta Sky Club earns the title of Best Airline Lounges, while the airline wins Best Airline App.

Air Canada picks up its own duo: a fourth win as Best Airline Cabin Cleanliness and a five-time win as Best Airline in North America. United Airlines will need a jumbo jet to transport its awards home this year! Its MileagePlus program is a triple winner, including its 20th honor as Best Overall Frequent-Flyer Program, an 11th win as Best Frequent-Flyer Bonus Program and its second win as Best Frequent-Flyer Elite-Level Program for the Premier 1K level. Overall, United Airlines is Best Trans-Atlantic Airline for the second consecutive year. The counterpart award, Best Trans-Pacific Airline, goes to Cathay Pacific Airways.

Let’s take a look at the best airlines by region, starting with LATAM Airlines Group, Best Airline to South & Central America, three years running. Aeromexico wins Best Airline in Mexico for an impressive 14th consecutive year, while Air Tahiti Nui earns its sixth Best Airline in the South Pacific nod. TAP Air Portugal takes its lucky No. 13 win as Best Airline in Europe, and LOT Polish Airlines is Best Airline in Eastern Europe for the second consecutive year. Continuing around the world, Royal Air Maroc shines as Best Airline in Africa, Gulf Air takes its first nod as Best Airline in the Middle East, China Airlines grabs its Best Airline in North Asia win for the fifth consecutive year, and Air India is Best Airline in Central/South Asia & India for a milestone 10th year in a row. For the third year in a row, Japan Airlines earns the Best Airline to Japan honor. Best Airline in China goes to Xiamen Airlines, with Qantas taking its second Best Airline in Australia and New Zealand title.

There’s no coming or going without time spent in the airport, so let’s move on to those hubs delivering an incredible airport experience. That starts with Best Overall Airport in the World, going to iGA Istanbul Airport for the first time. The airport is also the big winner of Best Airport in Europe, Best Airport Dining, Best Airport Shopping for the second year, and Best Duty-Free Shopping in Europe two years in a row.

Taking the award every year of our survey, Chicago O’Hare International Airport is Best Airport in North America 20 times over! Impressive is spelled “ORD.”

Rounding out our airport winners, we have Hamad International Airport, seven-time Best Airport in the Middle East; Incheon International Airport, seven-time Best Airport in Asia and three-time Best Duty-Free Shopping in Asia; El Dorado International Airport, Bogotá, six-time Best Airport in South America; O.R. IHG Business Edge wins an impressive fifth Best Small- to Mid- Sized Business Program honor. Aloft reclaims its Best Lifestyle Hotel title for the second year in a row. LOTTE HOTEL SEOUL takes its ninth Best MICE Hotel honor and its 12th Best Hotel in South Korea nod.

Open-ended ballots ran in subscriber copies of Global Traveler and online at globaltravelerusa.com/gt-tested-awards-ballot from Dec. 6, 2022, to Aug. 31, 2023. Ballots were distributed via direct mail and email during the same period. Ballots returned with less than 50 percent of the fields completed were disqualified.
