Trying to see fascinating, beautiful Rome in one day is like trying to see New York City in one day. You can’t do it all. But, if you’re like me, you’ll sure try.
My favorite thing to do in this city is walk. Roaming the crowded, narrow streets lets you really feel the heartbeat of Rome and observe its people; you may even encounter scenes straight out of a Fellini film.
Don a pair of good walking shoes, pick up a decent map and head first for the 18th century Trevi Fountain (Piazza di Trevi) made famous in the 1954 film classic Three Coins in a Fountain. Legend has it if you toss a coin into the fountain, you’ll ensure a return visit to Rome.
From there, make your way via side streets (keep your eyes peeled for statuary and other architectural delights) to the Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Spagna). Built between 1723 and 1725, the steps were named after the Spanish Embassy, which is still located in the piazza. Not only are the steps an impressive sight and a popular meeting place, they are also near the city’s best designer shopping along Via Borgognona (Prada anyone?).
Getting hungry? Check your map and mark the route for the 10-minute walk to the 19th century Hotel Eden (Via Ludovisi 49), where the rooftop restaurant offers a panoramic view of the city. Refreshed and ready to set out again, hail a cab and head for Vatican City. Whether you’re Catholic or not, a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica (Piazza San Pietro) is an amazing experience. The church, a mix of Renaissance and baroque design, is filled with works of art created by the likes of Michelangelo and Bernini.
Note: With one day in the city, you really don’t have time to do justice to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, but if they are a priority, it’s best to hire a private guide. Your hotel can help with arrangements. And unless you’re really into having your photo taken with a costumed gladiator, a drive-by is sufficient for viewing the remarkable remains of the Roman Colosseum (Via del Colosseo).
End your day with a cappuccino in a cafe at Piazza della Rotonda. The sprawling square that fronts the Pantheon is a popular place to hang out and watch the world pass by.
