Icelandair Lets Travelers Take A Dip In Iceland’s Blue Lagoon During A Free Stopover In Reykjavik

Feb 17, 2013
Daily / Feature

Connections can be exhausting, but Icelandair gives travelers the option of a uniquely relaxing layover. Schedule a day-long stopover in Reykjavik during travel between North America and Continental Europe, Great Britain or Scandinavia — without incurring any additional fees. The break gives you plenty of time to hop in a bus or cab at Keflavik International Airport (RKV) in Reykjavik for the 20-minute ride to the Iceland’s famed Blue Lagoon.

The drive follows a road winding past huge rocks, each connected to a legend involving trolls or elves. Once there, full-size lockers accommodate your luggage while you immerse yourself in the soothing geothermal waters. In Iceland, visiting a volcanic pool is part of a cultural, social and healthy lifestyle custom embraced daily. At Blue Lagoon, the lake filled with mineral-rich geothermal seawater is part of a low-key, no-frills facility where you can soak in the steamy water and reap the benefits of the naturally occurring algae and silica that it contains.

After your soak, enjoy lunch at the Lava Café, partially surrounded with walls of carved lava. Be sure to try skyr, a delicious national specialty. Pronounced “skeer,” this low-fat, cultured dairy product resembles a thick, custardy yogurt, and is often flavored with fruit or honey.

Review: Prestige Oceanfront Resort

Vancouver Island gets progressively wilder as you leave Victoria behind and follow the coastline west. By the time you reach Sooke, about 45 minutes from the provincial capital, city blocks have surrendered to forests, rocky shoreline, sheltered coves and long views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Prestige Oceanfront Resort rises directly above Sooke Harbour, where boats move across the basin, and the Olympic Mountains form the horizon beyond the strait.

Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley

Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
