Colder destinations and off-season escapes are beginning to see more action, but travelers are slowly turning away from the often-visited destinations and instead seeking lesser-known spots. Mongolia is one of those off-season destinations travelers flock to in order to escape crowds. Here’s why:
Walk Across a Frozen Lake During the Ice Festival
Throughout winter, Lake Khövsgöl freezes over and becomes a stunning frozen landscape that hosts its annual Ice Festival. The festival features ice sculptures, horse-sleigh racing, archery and fun competitions.
Indigenous Experiences
Newly opened Ayan Zalaat in Ulaanbaatar immerses visitors in Mongolian culture, including traditional throat singing, UNESCO-recognized Biyelgee folk dance at on-site Mongolian Theater and spiritual experiences at Soma Temple. Spend time with a Buddhist monk at the traditional sanctuary and learn about different teachings and mindfulness practices rooted in the destination’s centuries-old connection to Tibetan Buddhism.
Trek the World’s Coldest Desert
The Gobi Desert transforms into a totally different landscape in the winter months. Forget the hot temperatures and say hello to snow-dusted dunes, frozen valleys and more-than-extreme adventure travelers will love.

Oct 7, 2026Review: Prestige Oceanfront Resort
Vancouver Island gets progressively wilder as you leave Victoria behind and follow the coastline west. Prestige Oceanfront Resort rises directly above Sooke Harbour, where boats move across the basin, and the Olympic Mountains form the horizon beyond the strait.

Sep 30, 2026Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley
Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
