Within the next two years, Saadiyat Island, immediately northeast of downtown Abu Dhabi, will leap into the limelight of the world’s cultural stage.
In 2016, the Louvre’s first outpost outside of Paris will open its doors here, housed in a stunning building designed by Jean Nouvel. The Louvre Abu Dhabi will boast a collection that will include ancient antiquities as well as major works by Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Jacques-Louis David, Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse and Andy Warhol.
Also in 2016, the futuristic Zayed National Museum is expected to open, designed by Foster + Partners. With architecture intended to evoke the feathers of a falcon in flight, the museum will be dedicated to the history of the United Arab Emirates and its founding father, Sheikh Zayed.
The following year, the $800 million Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is slated for its official opening, with 12 times more exhibition space than the Guggenheim New York. The Abu Dhabi branch will specialize in post-1960 art.
In the longer term, there are plans for an incredible Performing Arts Centre designed by Zaha Hadid.

Sep 30, 2026Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley
Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
