Making music in South Tyrol is a serious hobby for the 10,000-plus men and women of the region who are members of local brass bands. Almost every village has one, and there are approximately 211 brass bands in total, each performing in churches, at festivals and on concert greens. Band members don traditional Tyrol costumes bearing the unique design of their village or valley. In most cases, the costumes are made by hand: cotton shirts, hats, leather shoes and lederhosen for the men; and cotton blouses and dresses for the women. Some of the costumes even carry symbolic messages. For example, in the Val Sarentino/Sarntal, a man with green braiding on his hat is available for marriage, while a man with red braiding on his hat has already been taken. The bands play a wide variety of music, ranging from classic marches and waltzes to contemporary compositions and pop music.
