Ride-share company Uber followed through with its stated goals of rolling out self-driving car technology in Pittsburgh. The first cars hit the road in September. However, the technology isn’t advanced enough to be completely driverless; for now, cars will come with drivers to ensure safety.

Uber has worked since 2014 to put self-driving cars on the road and is piloting its self-driving car program in Pittsburgh, with plans to continue a rollout in other cities. The company said these cars have the ability to reduce the number of accidents and free up 20 percent of space in cities used to park cars and cut congestion.

“Creating a viable alternative to individual car ownership is important to the future of cities,” Anthony Levandowski, vice president of self-driving technology, and Travis Kalanick, CEO, Uber, said in a joint statement.

However, the cars may still need human intervention — for now at least.

“Even when these technology issues get fixed, we believe ridesharing will be a mix — with services provided by both drivers and self-driving Ubers,” they said. “This is because of the limits of self-driving software and the skyrocketing demand for better transportation which people-powered transport is uniquely able to solve.”
