You might want to bring some disinfectant next time you fly. A new study shows the dirtiest parts of a plane’s cabin are the headrests and seat pockets. According to CBC.ca, a recent study looked at more than 100 samples from 18 flights on three of the largest airlines in Canada: Air Canada, WestJet and Porter.
The results showed around half of the areas tested by the team had bacteria, yeast or mold, while E. coli bacteria was found on headrests and seat pockets. Scientists also found the bathroom handles, tray tables and seat belts are full of infection-causing microbes.
Why don’t crewmembers work to keep the planes cleaner? They simply don’t have time, according to Stephane Poirier, former WestJet employee.
“We had no time to wash the table or clean everything perfectly,” Poirier said. “We don’t have rags, we don’t have spray on board. Lots of [cleaners] are a dangerous good … so it’s either water from the aircraft, or a napkin.”
