Qatar Airways reports it is operating with business as usual despite a recent decision by Qatar’s four neighboring countries to blockade the nation.
The carrier released a statement saying its global operations were “running smoothly” and that the airline was “continuing its ambitious expansion plans.” Those plans involve adding flights to Dublin (DUB) with services to Nice (NCE) and Skopje (SKP) to come in July. More new routes are planned for this year and next, including Las Vegas (LAS), Canberra (CBR) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG).
The airline said, at the time of the statement, the past week saw approximately 1,200 flights from Doha to more than 150 destinations worldwide, with 90 percent of flights departing within 15 minutes of their scheduled departure time.
“As far as we are concerned, it is business as usual,” said Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar Airways. He called on the International Civil Aviation Organization to declare the blockade “an illegal act.”
“This blockade is unprecedented, and it is in direct contradiction to the convention that guarantees rights to civil overflight,” said Al Baker. “We are not a political body, we are an airline, and this blockade has stripped us of the rights which are guaranteed to us.”
