London: All Inclusive

2011 / July 2011

Start your day with a leisurely made-to-order breakfast at the Club InterContinental, an exclusive lounge on the seventh floor of the InterContinental London Park Lane, with panoramic views encompassing Big Ben on the left and the Wellington Arch to the right.

The InterContinental is located less than a 10-minute walk from three wheelchair-accessible museums: the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, known as the V&A. (Exhibition Road is undergoing construction through December; pedestrians might encounter detours.)

Another walkable diversion is the posh department store Harrods, established in 1839. Some 15 million people cross its thresholds every year. Maps of the 4.5 acres of merchandise are distributed at the entrances. Navigating through the throngs of shoppers is challenging in a wheelchair, but worth the effort. Pick up a thank-you gift for a client or indulge in a sweet from the ground floor’s array of pastries and confections. We chose a collection of mini-cupcakes to nibble on while strolling through Hyde Park.

To venture out of the neighborhood, hail one of London’s iconic black taxis. The wheelchair-accessible vehicles make traveling from one side of town to another a snap.

London’s South Bank is a vibrant area with street performers, cafés, galleries, theaters, musical venues and attractions such as the accessible London Eye. Drop by the recently renovated Royal Festival Hall where you can listen to the free lunchtime music on Fridays and Sundays, and view contemporary art exhibits at the Hayward Gallery. Our Blue Badge Guide and museum lecturer, William Forrester (tel 44 7867 521868), met us at the hall and helped arrange tickets for a Mahler concert. We bought wheelchair-accessible seats in the choir section and enjoyed a face-to-face view of the conductor leading the orchestra.

Forrester, a wheelchair user, coordinates accessible tours of London. Under his tutelage, we hopped aboard a red double-decker bus and made our way to The British Museum. Forrester’s explanations of everything from the Rosetta Stone to the controversial Parthenon sculptures had other patrons leaning in to eavesdrop on our private tour.

Our favorite evening entertainment is attending the theater. Many of London’s performances are staged in historic buildings. While not all of the theaters can accommodate wheelchair users, many do. At the more than 100-year-old Victoria Palace Theatre, our stall-level (orchestra) seating was just 10 rows from the stage. Access at the New London Theatre requires riding an elevator that measures a mere 27.5 inches. Staff at every theater we attended escorted us to the special seats. Wheelchair seating is extremely limited, and access varies dramatically from one theater to another. It is a good idea to purchase tickets weeks before your trip by contacting each theater’s box office. Phone numbers and accessibility information can be found at www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk.
