In August 2025, I spent the weekend at Lansdowne Resort and Spa, an independently owned, AAA Four-Diamond property just 30 miles outside Washington, D.C. Its convenient location on a former riverside plantation only 12 miles from Dulles International Airport in Leesburg, Loudoun County, attracts both business and leisure clients for its amazing facilities and proximity to the capital’s historic and cultural sites and the pleasures of North Virginia’s rural wine country.

As we were driven through a residential golf course community and up the long drive leading to the nine-story resort, I got a sense of the verdant countryside. Once registered, I stepped out onto an upper-floor balcony in one of 13 suites, from which I could see the natural undulations of the 500-acre Potomac River Valley golf course setting, a stand-alone pavilion and surrounding pools.

Our spacious room — one of 296 — had a similar vista and contemporary décor with two queen-sized beds, a chair with ottoman and a flat-screen TV. Guests, particularly business travelers, appreciate the high-speed WiFi, bedside outlets and oversized workstation. The well-equipped bathroom includes a shower and tub, and vanity area with hair dryer. Other amenities include plush bath robes, mini refrigerator, in-room safe, iron and ironing board, and bottled water at check-in, along with coffee and tea maker. Specially designed guestrooms meet or exceed the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

There’s an array of in-house dining options. The casual kiosk-style Riverside Hearth views the landscape and serves eggs cooked to order and salad ingredients, such as lettuce, herbs and microgreens, hydroponically grown in their kitchen garden. Coton & Rye — named for the property that stood on this very land in the late 1700s — is open for dinner and serves Old Dominion recipes prepared from fresh, local farm ingredients. Harmony Market, adjacent to the registration desk, sells a selection of snacks and beverages. Additional on-site food outlets include Piedmont’s, with its floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and sun-dappled terrace; it overlooks the Greg Norman Golf Course and Potomac River and serves modern American cuisine. For more casual tavern fair and locally distilled spirits, craft brews and wines, there’s also an option to eat in the casual Piedmont’s Pub or at Turnberry’s, situated between holes 9 and 10 on the Greg Norman Course. The family-friendly Current’s Pool & Grill is open seasonally for sit-down bites and grab-and-go fare.

The conference center has earned the distinction as the best in the D.C.-area and caters to a business clientele with 55,000 square feet of meeting space. Included is a state-of-the-art Thinking Center and a 9,525-square-foot ballroom. In addition to indoor venues, there’s an open-air, 3,500-square-foot covered pavilion nestled into the pastoral setting.

For pampering and relaxation, the 12,000-square-foot Spa Minérale boasts 12 personal treatment rooms, two twin treatment rooms, steam rooms, dry saunas, whirlpools, relaxation lounges, a hair and nail salon, and an expansive and seasonal spa menu of services.

There’s an outdoor aquatic complex with private cabanas and an indoor lap pool with a large whirlpool tub I enjoyed on three occasions; the wet area is reached through the high-tech fitness facility and accesses one of the three outdoor pools. Plus, the resort offers two lighted outdoor tennis courts and three pickleball courts.

The expansive golf facility offers 45 holes of golf exclusive to members and resort guests. Some play the nine-hole Greg Norman SharkBite course with its five sets of tees; or choose the two 18-hole layouts on Norman’s 7,332-yard, par-72 dubbed “hardest mile in golf;” or the challenge of Robert Trent Jones Jr. Course, a classic 7,063-yard, par-72 golf course. A paved golf cart path and walkway through the adjacent Virginia Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park entices walkers and golfers alike to appreciate local wildlife and the beauty of nature.
