Most travelers to Ireland skip over County Carlow entirely; the inland county is the second-smallest in Ireland, tightly tucked between Kilkenny, Wicklow and Kildare. But many of its gems lie less than two hours from Dublin, including historic Lisnavagh House and Gardens, a Tudor-style estate from the 19th century nestled within acres of woodlands.
The beautiful estate and gardens welcome every season with open arms, but winter is an especially unique time.
For the first time, Lisnavagh hosts its first Murder Mystery Night Nov. 28, setting off an exciting season of programs and festivities. The murder mystery, created and hosted by Murder Mystery Ireland, transforms the house into an interactive country-house mystery in which guests become part of the story. The experience includes a three-course dinner in the Lisnavagh Garden Wing. Overnight offers are also available.

On Dec. 19, a seasonal feast hosted by Irish food and drink consultant Santina Kennedy graces the estate. The evening begins with a Taste of Carlow, letting guests sample food and drink made in Carlow, as well as meet local producers and purchase food and drink on offer. William Bunbury, owner and ancestor of the founders, then brings guests through the history of the estate. This is followed by a seasonal dinner from Lisvanagh chef Steve Mercer, highlighting ingredients from the estate’s Walled Garden.
The annual Lisvanagh Christmas Market, meanwhile, returns Dec. 5 and 6, bringing together vendors selling seasonal produce, locally made items and distinctive gifts. Expect home-made treats, hot drinks and other warming foods.
Lisnavagh offers a wide range of accommodations, from traditional and historic rooms in the house to airy cottages. The property also provides extensive programming for corporate retreats and other events.
