For many, traveling to the United Kingdom for pleasure (and business) usually leads to London, Manchester and Liverpool. In the past few years, however, the lure of Cardiff’s new architecture and revitalization projects are bringing in visitors, involving everything from new music and entertainment venues to redesigned historic districts of the city, including the lovely Canal Quarter.

Cardiff’s architecture scene blends historic heritage with cutting‑edge regeneration, academic research and student‑led design initiatives from the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University. Major new projects appear in the Cardiff Bay district, including sustainable housing and cultural facilities. Cardiff Bay is the city’s flagship revitalization area, featuring the stunning Wales Millennium Centre, a project that opened in 2024 and represents modern Wales’ confident, bilingual and culturally ambitious character, looking forward while also honoring tradition. While Cardiff Bay is a large, established waterfront regeneration area on the River Taff, the city’s Canal Quarter is a smaller, newer revitalization project in the eastern city center, focused on reopening the historic Dock Feeder Canal and other attractive waterfront venues.

Wales Millennium Centre anchors the revitalized Cardiff Bay waterfront and offers a window into contemporary Welsh culture that’s accessible, impressive and uniquely Cardiff.

Nearby attractions include Senedd (the Welsh Parliament), a modern legislative building that also uses Welsh slate and steel, symbolizing contemporary Welsh identity within a striking modern building with free public galleries and the opportunity to watch Welsh democracy in action. Nearby 1868 Norwegian Church Arts Centre offers Norsk Café Bar and gallery.

“The new Cardiff Bay Indoor Arena project will ensure that Cardiff continues to thrive as a hub of creativity and innovation. “This project will drive economic growth and social value, particularly in the area surrounding the arena, creating jobs and lifting horizons in some of Wales’ most economically-challenged communities,” said Jonathan Reynolds, Business and Trade secretary, Cardiff. “It is for all these reasons that the Arena has been a priority for this Council administration for over a decade, and why I’m delighted that this decisive milestone has now been achieved.”

Plans for Cardiff’s highly anticipated, 16,500-seat, Populous‑designed indoor venue, is under construction and set to open in 2028, forming the heart of Cardiff Bay’s Atlantic Wharf regeneration project. “The project will ensure that Cardiff continues to thrive as a hub of creativity and innovation. It is the cornerstone of our Music City strategy, which aims to support every part of Cardiff’s music ecosystem, from musicians to producers, promoters, and venues,” said Huw Thomas, leader, Cardiff Council.

New Cardiff Arena, at the heart of Cardiff Council’s proposed masterplan for the development of the Atlantic Wharf area of the city, will include food and leisure amenities; a new cultural center; a public square; a 4-star hotel; office space; and up to 1,100 new homes. It will also create a new transport hub, improving connections for Cardiff Crossrail and the metro line between the bay, city, and revitalized and historic St Mellon’s station, while offering excellent pedestrian and transport links.

Montreal-based design firm AtkinsRéalis leads Cardiff’s Canal Quarter revitalization, with a transformative urban plan centered around the mid-19th-century Dock Feeder Canal. The Canal Quarter has become a beacon for many culinary venues, including Daffodil Gastro Pub, The Cardiff Arms, The Exchange and many more.

As part of Cardiff’s group of design-friendly hotels, there are several properties attracting business and leisure guests. Boutique Hotel Indigo Cardiff by IHG is a good choice for Welsh-inspired interiors, with its rooms and public spaces incorporating Welsh industrial, cultural and musical themes.

Parkgate Hotel is a luxurious, design-led property occupying restored historic civic buildings near Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

Copthorne Hotel Cardiff-Caerdydd reopened in May 2025 after an extensive refurbishment. It is a quiet, 4-star lakeside hotel with free parking, Lakeview Lounge & Bar, and newly designed rooms just 30 minutes from Cardiff attractions.

Review: Caribe Royale Orlando

It’s truly its own universe: Caribe Royale Orlando is a sprawling property beckoning you forward with its coral pink exterior spanning many towers and buildings. The two-level lobby alone feels more like a community than a hotel lobby, with a Starbucks; access to the signature restaurant (in the midst of renovations), sports bar and gift shop; and a plethora of seating options. The bilevel layout also makes the entire space seem larger, opening up to the massive pool awaiting just behind the back doors.

The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations

The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.
