Hong Kong, Central District

Mar 1, 2013
2013 / March 2013

In Hong Kong, image is everything. And nowhere is that more apparent than in Central District, where shoppers can feast on a buffet of haute couture, complemented with dazzling displays and sky-high price tags.

But don’t let those price tags scare you; Hong Kong has a relatively low tax rate, just one of many reasons the city’s Central District is on luxury shoppers’ wish lists.

Another reason? Hong Kong has gone out of its way to make its shops accessible. Adjacent city blocks boast façades including Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and more. Even better: Central District has the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator system, with 20 escalators and three moving walkways to keep those stiletto-clad feet going strong.

For upmarket shopping and hobnobbing with celebrities, head to The Landmark, 15 Queen’s Road Central, Central Hong Kong Island. From Ascot Chang to Yves Saint Laurent, the luxury mall has every fashionista’s wish list covered. Together with its connected Landmark Alexandra, Landmark Chater, Exchange Square, Jardine House and Landmark Prince’s, visitors have 200 shops to tempt their wallets and several gourmet dining options to whet the palate.

With so many options, it’s easy to pick and choose where to shop. Just be sure at the very least to see Hong Kong Landmark, Shop 7-17 Landmark Atrium. This is the flagship Asia Louis Vuitton store. The façade alone — made of 7,000 floor-to-ceiling stainless steel strips reflecting light against a glass wall during the day and lit with LED lights at night — speaks of the opulence inside.

Be sure to stop by Café Landmark, 107-108 First Floor Landmark, for more international delights. The café, which features health-conscious and decadent options, bills itself as a “see-and-be-seen” modern dining experience.

Hong Kong is known for its spectacular jewelry. If you still have the stamina after taking on the Landmark, head to Chow Tai Fook, 38/F New World Tower, 16-18 Queen’s Road, for something sparkly. From delicate diamond tiaras (who doesn’t need one of those?) to gold Hello Kitty bangles, the famous jewelry store has plenty to offer.

For a more distinctively Asian feel, head to Shanghai Tang Mansion, 1 Duddell St., Central Hong Kong. The look, particularly The Dragon Plateau Campaign, is modern with a traditional flair.

Continue sampling the culture by finishing your day of luxury shopping with dim sum at Maxim’s Palace City Hall, 2/F, Low Block, City Hall. Settle in at the popular spot, knowing that the bite-sized steamed dumplings are worth the wait.
