If you haven’t been to wine country during harvest season, have you really been to wine country? Vineyards buzz with workers plucking sun-ripened clusters while the winery hums with sorting tables and presses gently extracting precious juice and tannins. In the cellar, the air is perfumed with an intoxicating cuvée of baking bread and grapes as vats alive with bubbling juice are tended to by the winemaker’s watchful eyes. For wine lovers, the experience is nothing short of magical. It also offers a newfound appreciation to the hard work behind every bottle in a way that simply bellying up to a tasting bar never could. Napa Valley has perfected the art of the harvest celebration with festivals, dinners, tastings, hands-on experiences and, of course, the opportunity to literally feel grapes between your toes.

If you’re seeking the quintessential classic Napa harvest experience, look no further than V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena. In the late 19th century Italian immigrant Vittori Sattui launched a thriving winery in San Francisco until Prohibition shuttered operations. In 1975 Vittorio’s great-grandson Dario re-established the family business in Napa Valley as one of the first to give guests a hospitality experience, and its harvest events are among the region’s most established. Its popular Crush Party, held Oct. 16, 2026, includes an old-fashioned grape stomp and the chance to learn about the winemaking process from barrel making to bottling, as well as music, dancing, Tuscan cuisine and sampling of more than 45 wines.

In 1983 Tony Peju launched PEJU Winery in Rutherford as one of the first with a tasting room that sold wine directly to consumers — a model subsequently embraced by just about every other Napa producer. Today the certified organic operation is run by the late founder’s daughters and welcomes visitors for tastings and events. Its Harvest Festival & Grape Stomp on Sept. 19–20, 2026, kicks off with some lively feet-in-the-barrel fun. Afterward, guests enjoy a casual family-style meal paired with a selection of wines from the winery’s portfolio.

Also located in Rutherford, Grgich Hills Estate was founded in 1977 by Hills Bros. Coffee heir Austin Hills and legendary Croatian winemaker Mike Grgich, who stunned the wine world when the Chardonnay he created at Napa’s Chateau Montelena beat out French wines in the 1976 “Judgment of Paris” competition. You can literally help make wine at a Regenerative Certified producer that continues to embody one of the most important stories in American wine history. Its Croatian Harvest Extravaganza on Oct. 3, 2026, features Croatian and American cuisine paired with Grgich Hills wines, performances from traditional folk dancers and the opportunity to stomp grapes just as the late founder did growing up in Dalmatia.

Known for its high- quality Pinot Noir grown high atop Napa’s Jamieson Canyon, Elkhorn Peak Cellars, a family-run micro-winery, has been crafting expressions for more than 40 years. Its Grape Stomps in the Vineyard — held Sept. 19, Oct. 3 and Oct. 10, 2026 — are intimate, interactive experiences where oenophiles can get their hands (and their feet!) dirty while learning more about what it takes to get wine from vine to bottle. After a guided walk with the farmers through the vineyards, the authentic event continues with visitors stomping grape clusters in a barrel; they’ll also enjoy wine and a personal charcuterie plate as a reward for their labor.

Founded in 1999 by dentist-turned- winemaker Steve Reynolds and his wife, Suzie, Reynolds Family Winery has evolved from a passion project into a second-generation Napa Valley estate. Located on the Silverado Trail just south of the lauded Stags Leap District, the winery is known for its hands-on approach to Bordeaux-style wines. Its annual Harvest Party & Grape Stomp, held this year on Oct. 10, invites guests to partake in a grape- stomping competition. Staff will also pull rare and aged library wines from their cellar to taste, paired with wood-fired pizzas and that indelible harvest energy.

Most visitors to Napa Valley fly into San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport, both served by major carriers including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines. Sacramento International Airport offers an alternative that’s sometimes easier to navigate. Napa Valley isn’t easily accessible via public transportation, but those arriving via SFO can hop on the San Francisco Bay Ferry to Vallejo and connect to Napa via VINE Transit bus service. As the region is spread out, you’ll most likely want to rent a car or book a private car service; drive times range from one-and-a-half to three hours, depending on originating airport and traffic.
