New York’s historic Renwick Hotel partakes in a rich literary tradition with the debut of the Gertrude Stein Suite, part of a $30 million project designed to pay homage to literary giants, including John Steinbeck, Thomas Mann and F. Scott Fitzgerald, who once frequented the iconic hotel.

Paris in the 1920s was an iconic period in literary history, due in large part to American novelist, poet and playwright Gertrude Stein. Along with her famous French Salons where she hosted the likes of Picasso, Hemingway and Matisse, Stein was a frequent visitor of The Renwick Hotel.

Dubbed New York’s most literary hotel by Condé Nast Traveler, Stein was rumored to often visit the hotel during trips to Manhattan and is now the first female author to be honored at the property with a unique design aesthetic and motifs exhumed from her ornate writing and extraordinary life in Paris.

The brand new suite is situated on the 10^th floor, coordinated by Stonehill & Taylor’s senior designer Kim Edwards with nods to the classic French Salon. Charming vintage teacarts and handmade tea sets accompany bookshelves filled with Stein novels and vintage French milk bottles and lavender, Stein’s signature scent. Bedecking the walls are Picasso replicas and art pieces made to recreate the many sketches that lined the walls of Stein’s Salon as well as a subtle nod to her beloved novel, Three Lives.

The bedroom features other creative allusions to Stein’s writing including a large rosebud drawing, inspired by her famous quote “a rose is a rose is a rose.”
