Occupying a unique, restored space that once housed a 1923 stone high school and adjacent Mid-Century middle school, boutique Hill Hall Hotel is officially open in Fayetteville, West Virginia. This 40-room boutique property’s location happens to make it an ideal base for travelers exploring the beautiful New River Gorge National Park and surrounding area.

“Fayetteville has always been more than a gateway to the Gorge, and I hope Hill Hall gives visitors another reason to spend time in town,” said Stephen Wendell, the hotel’s developer and founder, and chief executive officer, Mountain Shore Properties. “If someone comes here for the Gorge and ends up staying an extra night, having dinner in town, meeting people who live here, or finding a local business they want to come back to, that’s a great outcome for us. We want Hill Hall to give people more time to get to know Fayetteville and everything happening here.”

Recreated with wood, soothing earth tones and plenty of natural light, Hill Hall Hotel celebrates the architecture of the historic campus while offering guests design-forward spaces reflecting the Gorge landscape. Curated artwork, hand-painted signage by West Virginia designer Jordana Bungard and original photography accent an interior color palette of deep greens, muted blues and clay reds to evoke a warm, lived-in ambience.

For dining, there’s Patsy’s restaurant, plus access to a 24-hour guest pantry called Patsy’s Provisions, fully stocked with snacks, coffee from West Virginia-based Cherry River Coffee Roasters, grab-and-go choices, and treats that include Yumbel Cookies (a local favorite).

Named for Stephen Wendell’s grandmother, Pat “Patsy” Phillips Wendell, the restaurant offers a menu of traditional favorites, such as apple molasses-glazed meatloaf with silky potato, green beans and bacon; and Clear Water trout with mustard greens, jalapeño cheddar hush puppy and lemon beurre blanc. Led by Executive Chef Jeffrey Toth, the restaurant serves dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, along with Saturday and Sunday brunch.

Review: Bodysgallen Hall

The National Trust owns more than 500 historic buildings across the United Kingdom, each offering a vivid sense of its particular era. In common with many visitors, I often find myself wondering what it would be like to actually live in such a place. Imagine sitting, for instance, in one of those ancient oak-paneled drawing rooms at night, with the fire roaring and the wind rattling the ancient mullioned windows. I didn’t have to imagine it. Here I was, immersed in history in 17th-century Bodysgallen Hall in North Wales.
