One of New York City’s most iconic hotels will close for at least the next four years in January 2027 for extensive renovations. The 18-story Plaza Hotel revealed its closure to restore its complex façade and exterior.
The current Plaza Hotel has been in operation since 1907 and is now operated by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. It was made even more iconic when it was featured in the hit 1992 film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Because of its intricate exterior, detailed coordination and planning are required to properly restore the hotel. Further details regarding renovations have yet to be revealed.
The closure has, however, left many soon-to-be-married couples scrambling. The hotel has long been a coveted venue for weddings, hosting those for couples like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas and Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower. Many future brides are still waiting to hear from the hotel regarding next steps.
As for travelers to the city, the closure means simply admiring the hotel from outside. But even then, it is unclear how much scaffolding will cover the building.
