SuperFreak: The Rick James Story
With Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo at McCormick Place this weekend, I knew I would be spending a lot of time downtown. My busy weekend started by attending SuperFreak: The Rick James Story at Arie Crown Theater.
Four Days in Vienna
Several years and a few thousand working hours ago, I remember speaking with a group of colleagues about our favorite vacation destinations. Someone in the room had recently returned from a trip to Vienna, Austria, and I was sold. There was romance in her voice when she described the scenery and the city … more than I’d ever heard anyone talk about a European destination before.
The Great Chicago Ketchup Debate
Baseball season in Chicago means the start of the great debate. I'm not talking about Cubs versus White Sox. I'm referring to ketchup on hot dogs.
A Busy Weekend in Portland
We spent a long weekend visiting family and friends in Portland recently, stuffing a variety of activities in just a few days. The biggest draw was our 4-year-old granddaughter's participation in her preschool's spring "dinner theater" and silent auction fundraiser on Friday night. We had seen this same group of 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds perform in a December Reindeer Games variety show and were impressed with the performances (singing and dancing and dialogue) the children's teachers pulled out of them, and we'd been told that the spring show was an even bigger extravaganza. It turned out to be true.
Travel in Style
In a meeting about 30 years ago, the executives of United MileagePlus reported an internal survey indicated their best business customers were also their best leisure customers. It came as no shock to me, as I understand well the travel bug bites hard; and when you travel for business, you are always looking for that other place to discover on your own. Same goes with bleisure: Long before the term became widely used by the industry, we were using it and living it at Global Traveler. Often my business trips to California, Florida and all over the world included a weekend of golf, usually with clients.
Sailing and Snorkeling in the U.S. Virgin Islands
On the second half of my journey with Holland America Line, we docked at St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands on a particularly breezy and sunny day. Alongside another cruise ship, we disembarked and boarded a catamaran called Castaway Girl.
Loyola Home Run Derby
“It might be. It could be. It is! Home run!” That was the way late Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray called home runs in Chicago for so many years. If Caray was at Loyola's Hoyne Park on Saturday, he would have broken out that call for one important homer.
A Few Days in Tegernsee: Germany Part 2
In my last blog, I wrote about my flight to Germany on Condor Airlines’ business class, and now it’s time to get into a full recap of my trip — starting in Tegernsee.
A Busy Chicago Weekend
My last few days were spent at a play, a children's birthday party and a college softball game. Although it was busy, it was a lot of fun.
