My last few days were spent at a play, a children’s birthday party and a college softball game. Although it was busy, it was a lot of fun.
It started at a production in Joliet, about an hour south of Chicago. I watched my friend Michelle perform in Spring Break. On the way, we dined at Magpie’s Joy of Cooking. I was tempted to order the soup trio, which is three 4-ounce cups of soup. I loved the concept, but I opted for a loaded sweet potato. Overflowing with kale, quinoa, black beans, scallions, candied pecans and chicken, it was hearty and bursting with flavors and textures.
Next up was a children’s birthday party at Hi-Five Sports Zone, where the adults had almost as much fun as the kids. Located in Vernon Hills, 30 minutes northwest of Chicago, the 8,000-square-foot facility includes a basketball court and turf field. Organized games took a backseat to chaotic fun. Although I don’t have kids, I helped coordinate and control things a bit while still enjoying the party.

I finished the hectic stretch watching Northwestern beat Illinois in an exciting 4–1 softball game. The interstate rivalry always makes this game special. After the game, I visited with Illinois assistant coach Kirsten Verdun, friends from her days with the Chicago Bandits.
The days were a bit of a blur. I am looking forward to a quieter time this weekend.
