As a mix of the new and old, the Mediterranean and European, and the quaint and vivacious, Barcelona is one of the most unique cities in Spain. A booming city for tourism, millions of travelers are drawn to the capital of Catalonia each year due to the wide variety of offerings it gives its guests. From historic museums to bustling nightclubs, travelers are sure to find everything they are looking for in Barcelona.
The city itself has a long, rich history, starting off as a small Roman town and eventually evolving into one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe, where everything from the food to the fashion is innovative, stylish and full of life.
Barcelona can be broken down into several areas, each of which has its own personality and attractions. The Eixample is known for its Moderniste architecture, including Antoni Gaudi’s iconic, yet unfinished, Sagrada Familia church. However, just southeast of this area in Barceloneta, travelers will feel like they are a world away as they stroll through the small fisherman’s village, featuring restaurants that serve fresh seafood from their spots on the area’s sandy beaches.
Still, across all of the city’s charming and bustling neighborhoods, there are a few attractions visitors should make time explore. For art lovers and culture vultures, spots such as the Museu Picasso, Palau Güell, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and Museu del Calcat are must-sees. However, to enjoy the great outdoors, a day trip to Montserrat, a stunning multi-peaked mountain, should be No. 1 on travelers’ itineraries. Barcelona is also known for its stunning beaches, which have flourished into popular tourist spots in the past decade. For the best of these sandy spots, visit Platja de la Barceloneta, Platja de la Nova Icària and Platja de Sant Sebastià .
Of course, no cosmopolitan European city would be complete without high fashion, and Barcelona certainly does not disappoint in this area. While it is not the best place for bargain hunting, the city offers a booming selection at its more than 35,000 stores, especially in the shopping districts of Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla de Catalunya, Plaça de Catalunya, Portal de l’Àngel and Avinguda Diagonal.
Still, one of the most famous markets in the city does not specialize in clothing or accessories. La Boqueria, located in Ciutat Vella, is said to be the heart, and stomach, of the entire city as well as one of the best markets in Europe. While strolling its aisles, travelers will find fresh and colorful fish, meat and produce, making it the ideal spot to indulge the senses and mingle with the local culture.
Overall, Barcelona is a city that has grown richly through its many cultural influences, becoming a destination that is easy to love, yet hard to define. Whether travelers are relaxing on its beaches or strolling its European streets, there is always more of Barcelona right around the corner.
