Tranquil play in a spectacular setting — what more could you ask for? That’s exactly what you’ll find at Daufuskie Island Resort & Breathe Spa. Located on Daufuskie Island, a short boat ride from Hilton Head, s.c., the resort features two championship courses — the 7,081-yard, par-72 Melrose Course and the 6,900-yard, par-72 Bloody Point course.
The Melrose is a Jack Nicklaus signature course and one of the most award-winning golf courses in South Carolina. Opened in 1987, its links-style design features smaller target greens, a mixture of short and long par 4s and 5s, and challenging par 3s. It’s one of the few courses along the Atlantic seaboard that has three finishing holes that dramatically hug the Atlantic Ocean.
“Melrose was a gorgeous piece of property, an uncut jewel,” said Nicklaus when creating the course. “There’s oceanfront, salt and fresh marsh, live oaks, mature pines and magnolias. All we had to do was set a golf course in there and the end result was a design that tests the better players but is still playable and enjoyable for all golfers. Most of all, I think our design of the Melrose Golf Course gives players a memorable experience.”
Opened in 1991, the resort’s second course, Bloody Point, is named after a notorious 18th century battle between Native Americans and British troops that took place on the island’s southernmost tip. Designed by the team of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, Bloody Point is noted as both challenging and playable for golfers at all skill levels. Perfect for walking, the course hugs the Mungen River and winds through some of the island’s most scenic coastal marshes and dark-water lagoons. A medium-length, par-4 first hole starts golfers off with the fair challenge of a dogleg left and hazard on the right. The 17th hole is a picturesque par 3 nestled on Mungen Creek and affording views of the approaches to Savannah, Ga., on the horizon. Finishing on the 18th hole, golfers are as far south as they can play golf in South Carolina.
Both courses feature full practice ranges that mimic their respective courses, offering chipping and pitching areas, putting greens and practice bunkers. In addition to its two championship courses, the resort features two full-service pro shops, one at each course with an extensive selection of men’s and women’s golf apparel, brand-name equipment and accessories, a staff of Class A pga-certified professionals and a variety of educational programs and packages. Individual and private instruction is also available.
