A new opera and ballet theater in Kosovo will house four performance halls and a new public plaza in the capital city of Prishtina. As the first opera house in the Republic of Kosovo, the theater symbolizes the country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage while reflecting a new identity for Prishtina, rooted in creativity and a commitment to the country’s artistic growth.

Commissioned by Kosovo’s Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport, the theater will become the new home of the Kosovo Philharmonic, Ballet, and Opera. The building will include a 1,200-capacity concert hall, 1,000-seat theater hall, 300-seat recital hall, a theater room and an Education and Conference Center under one roof. The building is being designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with ALB-Architect.
Situated next to Palace of Youth & Sports, Fadil Vokrri Stadium and the Public Services Ministry, the new Kosovo Philharmonic will contribute to a dynamic new cultural corridor in the heart of the city.
“As one of the crowning achievements of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo in recent years, the entire project is an architectural masterpiece that elevates our capital, Prishtina,” said Hajrulla Çeku, Minister of Culture. “This building will be the home to least four institutions of particular importance in our cultural ecosystem and will serve as evidence of the Republic’s dedication to the culture of Kosovo.”

Architects proposed a simple and pragmatic, but very unique, arrangement of the performance venues draped in a soft, undulating exterior skin of photovoltaic tiles. The theater’s form is reminiscent of the free-flowing shapes of a performer’s costume, as well as the xhubleta, a bell-shaped folk skirt traditionally worn by women in Kosovo.
The central location of the theater provides convenient pedestrian access both at street level and above street level via the podium of the Palace of Youth & Sports. This existing podium will be extended to merge seamlessly with the theater’s grand outdoor staircase, simultaneously improving pedestrian connectivity and activating the space as a vibrant public plaza.
The theater’s undulating form naturally indicates entrances and key spaces, which welcome guests into a “public room” approachable and welcoming from all sides. Serving all four auditoria, the lobby is flooded in natural light from a central skylight, exuding a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The main concert hall features intimate seating areas that weave and interlock seamlessly to provide optimal views of the stage, while the three-tiered Theatre Hall offers a grand yet intimate setting supported by a full-height rigging system and concealed technical bridges. The adaptable theater room and elegantly proportioned recital hall offer further flexibility for diverse artistic expressions. The building is framed by a hardscape of natural stone, along with a series of landscaped “islands” and winding paths. These islands will be planted with diverse vegetation, including beech trees to promote biodiversity, provide seasonal variation and offer shelter.

Jun 18, 2025W Costa Rica – Reserva Conchal Review
On Costa Rica’s north Pacific Coast, the tranquil, 150-room W Reserva Conchal is located in a 2,300-acre, government-protected wildlife preserve encapsulating much of the country’s incredible eco-diversity. Habitats include mangroves, estuaries and a tropical dry forest; these places are home to howler monkeys, coatis, iguanas, magpie-jays, and perhaps a jaguar... if you can tear yourself from your room, that is. My Spectacular Ocean Escape was exactly that, decked out in vibrant hues to mirror the expansive views of lush foliage and tropical flowers (and ocean beyond), while incorporating indigenous patterns of tico culture. Design details included a green leather headboard and free-form leather sofa, a blue and orange mural, and tropical hardwood furnishings and paneling. A surfboard was reimagined into a shelf for the coffee station in a clever nod to the region’s surfing culture. The massive bathroom’s oversized shower looks out onto the vegetation, and my balcony was the perfect nook to sip wine with a side of sunset.
