Corfu, or Kerkyra, as the Greeks call it, is arguably one of the most beautiful islands in Greece — and one of the most cultured. Part of the Ionian Islands located off the western coast of Greece and Albania, it boasts a storied history dating back nearly 3,000 years and a heritage shaped by many foreign rulers who made it their own.
To get a true feel for the island’s history, head to the fortified area of the Old Town of Corfu, known in Greek as Palaia Poloi Kerkyras. In keeping with a tradition found throughout the islands, the main town bears the same name as the island. This historical neighborhood on the island’s eastern coast became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007, and to this day it remains a mixture of Venetian, French, British and Greek influence.
On your way to Old Town, you’ll want to pass through Spianada Square, sitting at the entrance to the neighborhood. The massive square is impossible to miss — it’s not only the largest town square in Greece but also the largest in all the Balkans. Walking through Spianada, you’ll find a mix of tourists exploring and locals going about their daily lives.

Flanking one side of the square is Liston, a long pedestrian street lined with arcade arches of multiple connected buildings crafted in the Neoclassical style. Built in the 19th century to house the French army, these buildings now house restaurants, cafés and kafeneia (coffee shops). It offers a wonderful place for a stroll, grabbing a snack or people-watching.
Beyond the square you’ll find Old Town’s maze of narrow cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings of various architectural influences. It’s home to the Old Fortress, a Venetian fortification integral in defending the island from invaders. Wandering through the streets and alleys feels like taking a step back in time … until you notice sale signs in shops and modern cafés filled with tourists sipping frappes.
Old Town hosts cultural events and celebrations throughout the year, but Easter is a particularly special time. On Saturday morning preceding the holiday, locals celebrate a time-honored tradition of dropping bright red clay pots filled with water, called botides, from balconies onto the street below.
Like all of Greece’s 200-plus islands, Corfu certainly has its share of incredible beaches and nightlife, but it’s the history and culture found at every turn in Old Town that bring new and repeat visitors year after year.
