Québec City’s Summer Of Luxury, History And Mystery

May 30, 2013
Daily / Exclusive

Eastern Canada’s gem, Québec City, is always a spectacular destination. Adding to the allure, summer sees the completion of renovations at the boutique Saint Pierre Auberge Distinctive, where 31 guestrooms and 10 suites in the historic hotel have been redesigned and updated. An even more historic address than this circa 1821 hotel can be found at the Huron-Wendat Museum. The traditional longhouse, completed this spring, is open to visitors for overnight stays. The special Tourilli package offered by the museum includes a night in the longhouse, a fire tender, and helicopter transport to a forest location for fishing.

For visitors who prefer to stay in the city, Tours Voir Québec will take guests on a two-plus hour walking tour that follows the footsteps of fictional Chief Inspector Armand Gamache from Louise Penny’s popular detective novel Bury Your Dead. During the tour through the city’s labyrinth streets and alleys, guides follow Gamache’s investigation path from the scene of the crime in the basement of the Literary and Historical Society of Québec. You can recover later by following the Gourmet Route to explore the region’s best in wine, local goods and artisan food products.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.

Review: Prestige Oceanfront Resort

Vancouver Island gets progressively wilder as you leave Victoria behind and follow the coastline west. By the time you reach Sooke, about 45 minutes from the provincial capital, city blocks have surrendered to forests, rocky shoreline, sheltered coves and long views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Prestige Oceanfront Resort rises directly above Sooke Harbour, where boats move across the basin, and the Olympic Mountains form the horizon beyond the strait.

Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley

Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
