Sweet memories of Valentine’s Day in Rome are even sweeter when you return home with a chocolate treat created by one of the Eternal City’s master chocolatiers.

Perhaps best-known, Moriondo e Gariglio (Via Pie di Marmo 21) has been turning out handcrafted chocolates since 1886. Select from more than 75 varieties of truffles, pralines and chocolates, each lovingly wrapped and packed into a red box. Near the Coliseum is Bottega del Cioccolato (Via Leonina 82), where chocolates are filled with such delicacies as glacéed-chestnut cream or infused with limoncello.

Valzani (Via del Moro 37), in Trastevere since 1925, creates handmade chocolates including chocolate teacups and tongue-tingling blends with pepper, along with rich chocolate tortes and Roman cakes that travel well. Bonbons from Quetzalcoatl Chocolatier (Via delle Carrozze 26) are eye candy, too, decorated in smart stripes and polka dots.

Cioccolateria Eltar (Via del Forte Braschi 81) creates chocolates with bergamot, ginger, green tea and other unusual ingredients encased in elegant designer shapes and finishes. In the San Lorenzo neighborhood near Termini Station, Said Cioccolato (Via Tiburtina135) has produced its own chocolates since the 1920s. Hazelnuts are captured in swoon-worthy ganache made from Arawak beans, and the adjoining bistro uses chocolate as an ingredient in main dishes as well as mind-boggling desserts.
