Arrival/Check-in: After waiting for a taxi at JFK in 17-degree weather for 45 minutes, walking into the warm, friendly lobby of The Mark was a treat. The modern lobby has bold black and white marble flooring and inviting couches. The concierge greeted me and check-in was prompt. I was shown to my room, my suitcase was sent up, and I was wished a good stay. (29/30)
Guest Quarters: I was in a Seventy-Seven one-bedroom suite, which offered a nice view of the snowy stoops of 77th Street. The room was spacious and warm, with a king-sized bed fitted with soft Quagliotti linens, an overstuffed armchair with chaise and ample closet space. The neutral colors were calming yet elegant with splashes of bold black. The Bang & Olufsen 32-inch LCD flat-screen provided a high-quality picture with iPod, MP3 and laptop connectivity. There is no desk in the room, but a table in the corner was large enough for my computer, phone and paperwork. Complimentary Internet access is provided. The bathroom was my favorite part; I was in New York for events and had to dress up, so I spent a lot of time in the bathroom getting ready. The suite’s modern elegance was continued in the bathroom, with black and white marble flooring and beautiful mint-green accents. The bathroom had large dual sinks, a deep bathtub and a walk-in shower with great water pressure. There were several lighting options, and the heated floors were a nice touch. The mirrored television gave me a chance to watch the morning news while getting ready. The unique bar had Sub-Zero freezer drawers. The design was subtle, with a wide selection of drinks and snacks. (30/30)
Services/Amenities: The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges is located off the lobby, offering unique breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner menus. I took advantage of the tea and had green tea with the Sweet Tea desserts plate of freshly made scones, éclairs and cakes. The Mark Bar is a chic space, offering signature cocktails to locals and guests alike. On the second floor, the famous Frederic Fekkai Salon offers all beauty needs. Although I did not use the gym, I poked around the 24/7 state-of-the-art space. A personal trainer is available by request, but the best part is the wall of large windows showcasing Madison Avenue. (40/40)
The Experience: This 118-room hotel offers a unique experience — sophisticated style in a bold, classy way. The Mark, on the Upper East Side, is one block from Central Park and within walking distance of major attractions, such as the Guggenheim and Carnegie Hall. There are blocks of shopping and restaurants nearby. Large corporations and businesses are not in the direct area but are just a cab ride away.
