There are ages of history to be explored in Jerusalem. As one of the world’s most important religious centers, the city caters to every type of traveler and offers something to fascinate every fancy. Everything from museums, concerts and performances to archaeological delights and religious sites can be found in Jerusalem’s three main districts.
Start in the hub of history, Old City. Enclosed by a 12-mile-long wall, its eight gates beckon visitors inside. Explore and marvel in the five sections of Old City — the Christian Quarter, the Armenian Quarter, the Muslim Quarter, the Jewish Quarter and Temple Mount. Temple Mount is home to the Wailing Wall, Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa Mosque, each an important monument in the world’s religious history.
Moving to East Jerusalem, one can wander the Az-Zahra, a modern thoroughfare of shopping, or take in views of the city from Hebrew University on Mount Scopus. Six churches reside on Mount of Olives, as well as one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the world. The Mosque of the Ascension commemorates the spot where Jesus ascended into Heaven.
West Jerusalem, or the New City, is home to several interesting churches and mosques worth exploring. Meander the area’s six unique neighborhoods for a taste of life in Jerusalem. Remnants of the past can be found on Ethiopia Street, lined with 19th-century stone mansions and the Abyssinian Church.

Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) in Tel Aviv is 31 miles west of Jerusalem. Sheruts, eight-passenger minivans that operate as shared taxis, provide transportation to Jerusalem for about $11 per person. The fixed price for a private taxi is $65. After 9 p.m. and on holidays, the fixed rate will be higher.
Bus service will take you to several noteworthy destinations in and around Jerusalem. A single full-fare bus ticket is around $1.50 per person. Taxis and sheruts are priced slightly higher than the buses; rates are constantly changing. Central Jerusalem and Old City are easily navigable by foot.
