Oh, the joys — and stress — of travel, especially during these days of ever-changing rules and restrictions. What in the world is a wellness wanderer to do? Sudeesh Sudhakaran, director of Spa & Recreation, Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort and Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel, offers a few suggestions and tips to ease the drama and help travelers keep their inner (and outer) Zen intact.
“Travelers who find themselves in confined spaces or seated positions during long periods of travel can easily apply techniques to help alleviate stress and relax their body and mind,” said Sudhakaran. He added the following techniques do not require prior knowledge of — or experience in — formal meditation practices and rituals:
- Pretend sleep meditation: Close your eyes and pretend you are sleeping while focusing only on your breathing.
- Stress buster acupressure points: These techniques are easy to perform with your fingers on different areas of the upper body, and can be done in any order. Pressure should be applied gently, but firmly, for a maximum of three minutes at a time:
-Pericardium 6: This pressure point is located on the inner side of the wrist and is reached when you hold your hand up so your palm is facing you, then place the three middle fingers of the opposite hand at the base of your palm. Now, place your thumb next to your three middle fingers — the location of your thumb is where the Pericardium 6 pressure point is located, at the center of your lower wrist. Apply pressure to this point with your thumb, index finger or middle finger, then repeat the technique on your other wrist.
-Third eye: This pressure point is located on your forehead just above your nose and in line with the top of your eyebrows. Apply small circular movements in a clockwise direction with your middle finger.
-Ren 17 acupressure point: Also referred to as your chest center, this point is located at the midpoint between your nipples. Apply pressure with your three middle fingers.
- Self-journal: Write down anything on paper, literally — words, sketches, illustrations (or a combination) — whatever your style of taking notes entails.

May 27, 2025Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu
Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
