Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
The ancient and modern form a potent and magnetic elixir in Hawai‘i’s capital city, with plenty of fresh, new developments to discover. Overlooking the Pacific and just a block from Waikīkī Beach, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani unveiled a gorgeous refreshment of its guestrooms and ‘Āinahau Tower, introducing new Junior Suites. The property sits on the one-time site of the ‘Āinahau Estate, which served as the home of Princess Victoria Ka‘iulani. Its 14,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event spaces include the 200-capactiy ‘Āinahau Showroom.
“A corporate event or conference in Honolulu is more than just a gathering, it’s an opportunity to create meaningful connections in a setting unlike any other,” said Lynn Whitehead, vice president, Global MCI Sales and Marketing, Meet Hawai‘i. “The combination of rich native Hawaiian culture, alluring landscapes and world-class hospitality makes every event truly special. Honolulu offers seamless global accessibility, premium accommodations and a variety of venues, from oceanfront resorts to historic sites, that provide both inspiration and efficiency.”

Renovations are currently underway at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, revamping its illustrious Rainbow Tower, and also the historic Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa. In honor of its 125th anniversary, Moana Surfrider’s revered blend of Victorian and contemporary décor is enjoying a multiyear refresh that will include three completely transformed wings and renovation of all 791 guestrooms and suites. It anticipates completing the project in 2026.
Elsewhere in the city, Courtyard Marriott O‘ahu North Shore recently upgraded 144 guestrooms, lobby spaces and recreational areas. And near the beach, OUTRIGGER Waikiki Paradise Hotel (formerly Ohana Waikiki East) has been introduced by OUTRIGGER Hospitality Group. The hotel, positioned next to International Market Place, boasts 443 guestrooms and suites designed to suggest lavish royal retreats.
For an especially powerful sense of place, consider Mirage at Wai Kai at Hoakalei Resort in West O‘ahu, a brand-new event venue overlooking Wai Kai Lagoon. A variety of spaces accommodate up to 160 people, with stunning sunset views and custom catering. Outdoor meetings can also take place at Swell, the 17,000-square-foot destination pool deck at ‘Alohilani Resort Waikīkī Beach. The complex offers fire pits; a saltwater infinity pool; and evening entertainment ranging from DJs and local music acts to “Light Monument,” a large-scale short film series that casts images of local art.

“What sets Honolulu apart,” added Whitehead, “is the ability to blend business with experiences that engage all the senses. Whether it’s a sunrise networking session overlooking Waikīkī Beach, a private lū‘au under the stars, or a team-building outrigger canoe race that fosters camaraderie in a way no conference room can, these unforgettable moments turn business gatherings into transformative experiences, leaving attendees inspired and deeply connected to Hawai‘i’s spirit of aloha.”
As Whitehead reminds planners, an event in Honolulu is more than just a meeting; it’s an experience that has the power to inspire, rejuvenate and make a lasting impact. Perks such as farm-to-table dining and exclusive chef-curated experiences featuring the flavor and diverse heritage of the islands can be layered with visits to natural wonders and historic landmarks. Unique immersive experiences abound, such as “Huki: A Canoe Celebration” at the Polynesian Cultural Center’s water stage.
Special events held aboard Majestic by Atlantis Cruises can accommodate up to 300 guests who can sail the coast, enjoy 360-degree views of Diamond Head crater and tropical breezes from the open-air top deck, or relax to live music and panoramic views in the air-conditioned cocktail lounge.
SCENIC DRIVES
It may be less than 40 minutes as the crow flies to reach the legendary North Shore from Honolulu, but you’ll want to take time to fully embrace the scenery. Follow H-201 to H-1, which becomes, first, Highway 99 along the edge of the old Dole Plantation fields, and then Hawaii Route 83 (Kamehameha Highway) as it curves east along the shoreline. Pull off along the way at one of the many fresh coconut stands, or check out the selection of food trucks and shave ice offerings near the “Big Wave” beaches made famous for their surfing competitions.
Head east from the city along Hawaii Route 61 (Pali Highway), then south along Hawaii Route 72 (Kalaniana‘ole Highway), along the Windward Coast Scenic Drive. It circles back to Honolulu, but what’s the rush? Sites along the way worth stopping for include Queen Emma Summer Palace, Nu‘uanu Pali Lookout, Lāna‘i Lookout and Makapu‘u Tide Pools. This is also the access route to Sea Life Park Hawaii. You can stretch your legs and enjoy the breathtaking landscape with hikes that include Koko Crater Railway Trailhead, Makaki Valley Trail and Lulumahu Falls. An expedition that’s a little more strenuous (but definitely rewarding) is Mt. Olomana Three Peaks Trail.
