With its towering minaret and Mughal-style domes adorned with crescents and stars sitting above exquisite Gothic, Moorish and Roman arches, the regal Kapitan Keling Mosque on Jalan Kapitan Keling is Penang’s largest and one of Malaysia’s most historically rich mosques. Founded in 1801, it was named after Caudeer Mohudeen, the head of the Indian Muslim community at the time. In the early 1900s a renovation expanded the original humble single-story brick structure. The name Kapitan refers to the leader of the South Indian Muslim community, and the term Keling comes from the ancient Hindu kingdom on the Coromandel coast of South India.
Admission is free; visitors are required to wear robes provided at the mosque and to remove their shoes. Guided tours are available at the Information Centre located at the ground floor of the minaret. Opening hours: 1–5 p.m. Saturday–Thursday and 3–5 p.m. Friday. Taxi fare from most hotels is about $13.
