Tried and True

2015 / February 2015

Global Traveler capped off its most successful year ever in 2014 with the celebration of its 150th issue in January 2015. This month marks our 11th anniversary; since our first issue in February 2004, we constantly adapted to the needs of our readers and the ever-changing marketplace. In 2014, we launched trazeetravel.com, appealing to the “new” traveler, and with the New Year, we re-evolved our editorial products. Let us know what you thought of our new tweaks in the January issue. Other changes this year will be internal, on our websites and in our circulation.

I toured London with my family last month, staying at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower, close to Harrods and Hyde Park. We enjoyed dinner with friends we met on our trans-Atlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2, Pauline and Dennis Banks, and next month we’ll have dinner in Philadelphia with Alan Clark and Gus Matuteb, two more QM2 tablemates. What a wonderful experience in the Rib Room at the Carlton Tower; the staff make you feel like royalty!

You might have noticed a letter in last month’s Mail Call about golf from a woman’s perspective. A recent round played at The Hotchkiss School Golf Course in Connecticut brought the letter to mind again, as they have a brilliant concept. Per the letter, it’s true: At most courses, women’s tee boxes are an afterthought. But at Hotchkiss, a high wooden guard shields players so they can tee off safely in front of the men’s tee boxes. Since golf enjoyment is all about speed and shortening delays, women often move ahead and wait. I am always concerned when they are “safely” standing on the side but forward; any missed hit could have dire consequences. If you are unhappy with the way you are treated at a course, tell the club. Smart pros and managers will listen. There are women-friendly courses, and like most things designed with women in mind, they are better for men. Bigger bathrooms, better amenities, better hotel bedding and healthier room service menus have been championed by women travelers, and men love them, too.
