Incheon International Airport Corp., IIAC, strives to promote travel to South Korea, a safe and desirable destination for potential travelers. These efforts, paired with the airport’s ongoing improvements, have seen the benefits for travelers flying into Incheon grow by leaps and bounds.
A decreased total number of travelers passing through the airport during June and July prompted IIAC to grant remissions on usage fees in order to bump up air traffic. It also invited Chinese and Japanese tourism industry leaders to visit the airport over the summer to display all the airport has to offer.
Consistently ranked among the world’s top airports, Incheon is the largest airport in South Korea and the primary gateway serving the Seoul area.
New offerings at Incheon include the latest addition of 13 flights in non-peak flight hours. In order to further embrace its new self-assigned identity as a “non-sleeping airport,” IIAC is doubling its number of nighttime limousines, broadening travelers’ 24/7 shopping and dining options and creating nighttime-only check-in counters. These added non-peak flights should help alleviate a variety of common airport problems, such as high passenger congestion, as well as create new demand.
Since August, passengers have also had access to free giga WiFi within the airport, a service three times faster than the commonly used WiFi. The new top-of-the-line Internet connection, which is only now being introduced in Korea, provides a speed of 1.3Gbps, allowing users to download as many as 1,000 music files in around 33 seconds.
New duty-free shops opened this autumn as well, as the airport completed interior construction work for the winter season. New retailers for this year include Entas Duty Free, SME Duty Free and Samick Musical Instruments.
As IIAC unveils the latest improvements on the heels of the MERS outbreak, it looks even further into the future, preparing for the opening of its new Terminal 2 in 2018. The new construction, bringing both added airport amenities and new flights, will be assigned to Korean Air and increase the airport’s potential capacity by 18 million passengers, from 44 million to 62 million.
