On the heels of Alaska Airlines’ buyout of Virgin America, Virgin mogul Richard Branson announced the kick-off of his new venture, Virgin Voyages. The cruise line, originally conceptualized in 2015, began its construction process in Italy, with plans to set sail by 2020. Seven-day journeys will take passengers from Miami to various locations in the Caribbean.
Routes will include lengthy stops at select islands, but instead of abbreviated days on land, guests will be encouraged to immerse themselves in travel experiences and the local culture rather than quickly hopping on and off the boat. Eco-friendly technology on board will turn heat into electricity, making Virgin Voyages one of the most globally conscious cruise lines in the world.
The three ships — which will cost a total of $2.55 billion — will hold 2,800 passengers each, while the designs and layouts are kept secret and will debut at a later date.
