Virgin Atlantic is in talks to take over ailing regional carrier Flybe.
Flybe reported last month it was talking to “a number of strategic operators” about a possible sale, following a dramatic drop in profits recently.
According to Sky News, sources at Virgin said, “the transatlantic airline was pursuing an interest in Flybe because of the opportunities a tie-up would provide to feed passenger traffic into Virgin Atlantic’s long-haul network, as well as its access to valuable take-off and landing slots at London Heathrow Airport which are ring-fenced for domestic flights.”
Both airlines already participate in codesharing on a number of routes.
If Virgin does buy Flybe, industry experts believe the Flybe brand would cease to exist, being completely absorbed into the Virgin Atlantic brand — similar to the absorption by Alaska Airlines when it purchased Virgin America in 2016.
But Virgin Atlantic’s takeover may not be without competition, as rival bidders such as Stobart Group are showing interest, too. Since reports of the potential sale, Flybe improved its finances in preparation.
