The Transportation Security Administration debuted new self-screening technology at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new technology marks TSA’s latest bid to make security checks safer and faster for travelers.

TSA first tested the new checkpoint technology on March 11.

“We are constantly looking at innovative ways to enhance the passenger experience, while also improving security,” said David Pekoske, administrator, TSA, in a statement. “This self-service prototype allows our trusted travelers to complete the screening process at their own pace. Testing at the Innovation Checkpoint in Las Vegas gives us an opportunity to collect valuable user data and insights, and explore opportunities to apply parts of the prototype to other airport security checkpoints. I am grateful for our partners in S&T and LAS airport, who were critical in bringing this vision to reality.”

TSA and the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate worked together to unveil this prototype checkpoint technology. Passengers at TSA’s Innovation Checkpoint at the Las Vegas airport will be the first to have the choice to use the new system.

The same standards and rules required of passengers using TSA PreCheck lanes apply to the self-screening lane.

The process begins with a video monitor providing travelers with step-by-step instructions for passengers to complete screening at their own pace. Passengers then must complete the required screening process to be cleared for travel. Next, automated exit doors open so travelers can gather their belongings and head to their flights.

Transportation Security Officers will be available for assistance if needed and will work to ensure passengers using the self-screening lane are following proper security protocols. During assessment in a live environment, TSA collects passenger feedback and data on the system’s performance, cybersecurity, human factors, design and other variables to better understand how passengers and TSOs interact with the system. The data collection will aid in development and decisions for future projects.

“The number of airline passengers continues to increase year-over-year, creating a need for innovative screening solutions that enhance transportation security and make traveling more efficient,” said Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, secretary for Science and Technology, Department of Homeland Security. “At S&T, we are pushing the envelope with new technologies and concepts toward designing the airport of the future. Self-paced screening is one step toward building that future.”

What are your thoughts on the new TSA self-screening technology? Would you prefer this process over the current screening process in place? What are some problems you might foresee?
