Next year will see Brazil establish a new visa system for travelers coming from the United States, Canada and Australia. Similar to the European Travel Information and Authorization System in the European Union, American, Canadian and Australian travelers planning to visit Brazil must apply for an e-visa online.

Originally planned to roll out this April, the e-visa will take effect next year.

The price will set travelers back $80.90 per person, but this payment lasts 10 years and across multiple entries into Brazil. Stays on the new visa will be limited to 90 days per year. To apply for an e-visa, applicants must supply additional information, including proof of income, proof of residence in the United States, and letter of intent detailing the dates and purpose of the trip.

Proof of income comprises providing the last three checking or savings account statements or the last six pay slips; travelers will need an average of at least $2,000 showing in their account to be approved. If travelers do not meet the monetary requirement, a sponsor can sign on their behalf showing their finances instead.

Applications must also include either proof of return tickets to Brazil or a signed return declaration.

While the change may seem startling for U.S. travelers, Brazilian citizens traveling to the United States must currently schedule a visa appointment at their nearest embassy and pay $185 for a visa to the United States.

The move hopes to bring more revenue into Brazil’s economy. In 2023 alone, U.S. visitors to the country numbered at just less than 500,000, only second to Argentinian travelers to Brazil. Americans continue to flock to popular Brazilian cities like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasilia.

Brazil’s visa requirement goes into effect April 10, 2025, and applies to all travelers coming and going by land, air or sea.

The announcement follows on the heels of yet another delay in the rollout of ETIAS in the European Union. ETIAS was originally planned to go into effect this year, requiring all non-E.U. passport holders to apply for pre-trip permission to enter E.U. countries.

What are your thoughts on the new visa? Do you think all countries should be allowed to implement some sort of visa? Have you traveled to Brazil before? Where did you go? Tell us your thoughts. Email us at [email protected]. Please include your full name and location.
