Following projections that Thanksgiving 2018 would facilitate some of the busiest travel periods in the country’s history, the Transportation Security Administration announced it was the busiest Thanksgiving in its history.
Sunday, Nov. 25, was officially the TSA’s busiest day ever thanks to 2.7 million passengers who passed through TSA screening procedures. In total, 25.6 million passengers went through screening procedures over the Thanksgiving period.
“I thank our entire TSA team and industry partners for their work and attention to detail during a very hectic time, ensuring safe and secure travel for all passengers,” said David Pekoske, administrator, TSA.
Although volume was record-breaking, TSA reports 95 percent of all passengers passed through security in less than 20 minutes. Ninety-nine percent of TSA PreCheck passengers waited for less than 10 minutes.
Throughout a typical day, TSA screens about 2.1 million passengers and crewmembers. The agency deals with roughly 4 percent growth annually.
Of the TSA’s 10 busiest travel days, three come during the Thanksgiving period. Three others surround July 4, and the others are also summer weekends. Seven of the agency’s 10 busiest days occurred in 2018.
