SpaceX recently announced plans to send two passengers on a tourist trip around the moon next year.

Elon Musk, chief executive officer, SpaceX, said the launch of the first privately funded tourist flight to travel past the International Space Station is scheduled for late 2018. While the two passengers are not revealed, they are not celebrities; however, they know each other. The passengers have to endure extensive training before making the journey.

The flight in 2018 could lead to one–two tourist trips around the moon each year. The inaugural tourist flight would be around 350,000 miles from Earth, before the spacecraft would pass the moon and be sucked back into the orbit of the Earth.

Musk acknowledged if NASA wants its astronauts to participate in the lunar flyby mission, the space agency would take priority. NASA announced it is looking into the possibly of putting astronauts on the first flight which will more than likely delay the launch to 2019.

The audacious, week-long flight will take place using a Falcon Heavy rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft. The rocket is expected to make a debut test flight later this year. Before the launch can take place, the company needs approval and licensing from the Federal Aviation Administration.
