Often called “Kiev’s Montmartre,” Andriyivskyy Descent (Andrew’s Descent) is one of the most storied and beloved streets in town.

Beginning just a few blocks from St. Sophia Cathedral, the cobblestone lane winds its way steeply downhill, past several of the city’s most important landmarks, chief among them St. Andrew’s Church, a beautiful example of Ukrainian Baroque architecture.

This is where you’ll find the house of Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov, author of The Master and Margarita, a must-see for literature lovers. There’s also the wonderful Museum of One Street with its eclectic collection of local artifacts, much of it the personal memorabilia of the Descent’s earliest denizens — doctors and dressmakers, priests and professors, rabbis and soldiers, and others.

Like its Parisian counterpart, the Descent is packed with bohemian art galleries, cozy coffee shops and plenty of bars and restaurants. For a little of everything, step into the Café Vernissage, the closest thing in Kiev to an authentic Parisian bistro. There’s art everywhere, and the tables are tiny, but the menu serves up big bold dishes exhibiting Ukrainian, Thai and French influences.

And whether you’re looking for handmade Ukrainian crafts — perhaps a Petrikov painted egg — or kitschy, Soviet knick-knacks, there’s no shortage of either at the many souvenir stalls along the way.
