Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca may have had a horse, but modern-day explorers can pedal in his footsteps from Barcelona to Rome on the new Hannibal Expedition from the touring pros at Ride & Seek. Planned for Sept. 2–30, the 1,787-mile two-stage cycling route is a 28-day journey through Spain, France and Italy.
During Stage One from Barcelona to Alba (968 miles, 16 days), participants set off from Barcelona, cross the Pyrenees and slip into France through Ceret, where Picasso once lived. The route continues through the French countryside in the Languedoc-Roussillon area before tackling legendary climbs including Ventoux, Galibier, Alpe d’Huez, Agnel and Izoard.
Stage Two from Alba to Rome (818 miles, 14 days) includes the Apennines and its stunning landscape of castles, farmland, vineyards and hill towns. From Piedmont, the route includes the Oltrepo Pavese and Emilia Romagna. Continuing on to Pisa, cyclists ride through areas of Tuscany and onward toward Rome. Designed for serious cyclists, tour prices begin at $6,540 per person. Cycle the entire route, or choose to take part in only one stage.
