Murcia’s Jumilla is known for its wines, earning its own Denominación de Origen. In this region, the coast gives way to the La Mancha plains. While visiting, take time to taste at BSI-Bodegas San Isidro, founded in 1934 by a group of grape growers. Winemaking in Jumilla dates back more than 5,000 years.
BSI-Bodegas San Isidro is known for its main variety, Monastrell, typical in the Mediterranean, with optimal conditions found in Jumilla. The winery’s vineyards are original and haven’t been mixed with American vines, as is the case in other areas of Europe. The short-deep limy soils, droughts and sandy soils prevent the Phylloxera aphid from developing, marking BSI as the winery with the most important production of Monastrell old vineyards in the world.
Monastrell represents 80 percent of the winery’s total production; other varieties include Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Tempranillo, Airén, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo.
