Personal stylist and wardrobe consultant Sally Mackinnon loves fashion and loves helping others find the perfect fit. And when those clients come to her home city of Melbourne, she knows just where to start shopping: Collins Street.
“Collins Street is a destination for world-class theater and high-end shopping,” Mackinnon said, “and its grand architecture and wide footpaths make it a very picturesque setting.”
A dream day on Collins Street for Mackinnon would kick-start with a “long black and piece of cake” at Hopetoun Tea Rooms in Melbourne’s heritage Block Arcade. Hopetoun, shops 1 and 2 at 282 Collins St., promises food the good old-fashioned way. If you’re too old-fashioned to indulge in cake first off, try one of their expansive breakfast entrées instead. Perhaps green eggs and ham (creamy scrambled eggs seasoned with fresh basil pesto, thick-cut leg ham and Vienna toast).
From there, Mackinnon recommends popping across the street to Tiffany & Co., 267 Collins St., for something shiny and new. “With my blue box in hand, I’d head up to Miss Louise for the latest European designer shoes.”
Miss Louise, located at The Westin on Collins Street, is the place for European bags, shoes and accessories since 1964. It’s also a gateway to the “Paris” end of Collins Street, where Chanel, Max Mara, Gucci, Hermès, Bally and Louis Vuitton stand ready to pamper travelers … who can afford it.
“I might then head into Australian jewelry designer Jan Logan (90 Collins St.) for a pair of beautiful South Sea pearl earrings to complete my look before rewarding myself with a glass of wine and bite to eat at Pei Modern restaurant,” Mackinnon said.
Keeping it to just a “bite” at Pei Modern, 45 Collins, may be a challenge. The award-winning newcomer has a changing menu that features fresh market items. Fare includes grass-fed steak tartare; ricotta dumplings with wild broccoli, nettle and hazelnut; and almond gazpacho with blue swimmer crab.
If the shopping selections sound a bit too feminine for your taste, fear not. Mackinnon has recommendations for men’s shopping, too.
“There are a few favorites on Collins Street,” Mackinnon said. “One being Harrolds gentlemen’s outfitters. If you’re a man with plenty of style and money to burn, this is the place to shop.”
Not to be confused with the British landmark Harrods, Harrolds, 101 Collins St., is the place for fashionable Australian men.
“Carrying labels like Tom Ford, Givenchy, Balmain Paris and Comme des Garçons, Harrolds is a one-stop shop for a man on a personal style mission,” Mackinnon said.
