The San Francisco Bay area’s Lyft customers will soon see self-driving cars on the roads.
According to Reuters, the ride-hailing service is partnering with start-up Drive.ai to bring autonomous vehicles to select travelers. Drive.ai will supply the cars and the software, while Lyft will allow access to its riders.
A limited number of self-driving cars will be available at first, and passengers can choose whether to participate. Because this is a pilot program, all the rides will be free.
Cars will drive themselves, but each car will have a trained driver sitting in the front seat to act if something goes wrong.
“We want to make sure the experience feels as much like an autonomous vehicle experience as possible,” said Carol Reiley, co-founder and president, Drive.ai.
The company will use the pilot to test and improve its software, while Lyft will use it to gauge riders’ interest.
