Letter From The Editor: The Language Of Travel

Oct 31, 2014
2014 / October 2014

I’m fascinated by one of the products featured on this month’s Technology page.

Muuzii is an instant language translator. Through a combination of artificial intelligence and 24/7 access to a team of skilled linguists, the service provides real-time translation via text messaging. In its current incarnation, Muuzii can translate English to Spanish, Spanish to English, and English to Chinese. The service even identifies and accurately translates colloquialisms. Imagine the potential, not just in terms of on-the-spot translations but also as a low-impact means of gaining new language skills.

GT contributor Allison Voigts, author of “A Changing China,” is well-traveled throughout the world, and especially Asia, so her Chinese language skills may be top-notch. Still, in a bind, a service like Muuzii might come in handy. Also in this issue, our skilled team of contributors report on a roster of destinations around the world including Munich, Penang, Kerala, Genoa, Taipei, Helsinki, Acapulco, New York City and Paris.

And don’t miss the photo recap of our festive party during the Global Business Travel Association’s annual convention in Los Angeles. Staff and guests alike embraced the Casablanca vibe at Rick’s Place in the quirky Figueroa Hotel, donning fedoras and fezzes.

Here’s lookin’ at you, kid.
